Steam Tower - Orangy Tang

Steam Tower is the entry from Orangy Tang (see Snowman Village) into the recent Ludum Dare 48 hour game programming contest. It has you controlling a little chap trying to connect pipework together using varying length tubes - sounds familiar? No, it's really not that game, it's a physics based romp that'll have you swearing very quickly. Amazing work for 48 hours.

Night Squad 2 - N.O.P.

There's a very nice looking FPS posted over on the Java Gaming Forums from N.O.P. Night Squad 2 looks and feels a bit like counter strike. The general polish on this game for a one man band is awesome. You can check the game out at it's rather understated website. Windows users only I'm afraid.

NB. Apologies for stealing the screenshot, couldn't get a good one because no one else was on.

Quake 2 in a Browser - Kappa One

KappaOne recently showed a demo of Quake 2 (or rather the Java port, Jake 2) running as an LWJGL applet. I was lucky enough to try this out and can happily report it ran beautifully, played like normal multiplayer deathmatch and included fullscreen support. There's an interesting piece over at Kaioa.com questioning why this isn't what's happening for Quake Zero.

Esoteric - Rui Caridade

Rui Caridade is working on a Dreamcast Emulator in Java, called Esoteric. It's a university project but he seems to be making great progress showing screnshots of some initial games being run. I know we're all waiting to try Ikaruga on it!

The venerable Orangy Tang brings us a bizzare and challenging game in Snowman Village. Guide your snowball across the frozen landscape dodging spikes, birds and bushes and collecting decorations. Once you get back to the village you can build, decorate and name your own snowman to remember your journey.

UFO - Matthias Mann

UFO (webstart) is an all action shooter placing you in control a futuristic jet defending an sparse landscape from incoming alien attack. The 3D graphics (Worlscape Engine) don't hamper the arcade feel of this shooter which is a hell of a lot of fun. We just need to convince him to add multi-player and full UFO Unknown style campaign mode!

Droid Assault - Puppy Games

Puppy Games brings us another all action shooter, this time based around the classic C64 game Paradroid. It removes the transfer mini-game from the original and increases the focus on dodging and shooting. The visuals and sound provide the feeling of an old school shooter while maintaining the upgrade progress of the original game. The game is available for $9.95 from the Puppy Games Website
